How to Dispute an Error on Your Credit Report
Identify the specific error, gather records and use the official dispute process yourself.
A dispute is for information you believe is inaccurate or incomplete. It is not a way to remove an accurate account because it is unfavorable. The FTC says accurate, current negative information cannot legally be removed by a credit repair company. You can correct mistakes yourself without paying CreditMango or another service.
Prepare the facts
Get the report that contains the entry. Write down the specific information that is wrong, what it should say and why. Gather copies of statements, payment confirmations or other relevant records. Keep originals and a copy of every message you send. If you suspect identity theft, use IdentityTheft.gov and the CFPB's identity-theft guidance.
Send a focused dispute
The CFPB's step-by-step instructions explain how to dispute the item with the credit reporting company and the company that supplied the information. Describe each error clearly, say what correction you want and include copies of supporting documents. The CFPB provides sample letters if you prefer to write. Use the current address or online channel listed by the reporting company or information provider.
Keep track of the response
Save submission confirmations, copies of documents and investigation results. Compare the updated report with what you requested. If the problem remains, the CFPB page explains further options, including a complaint. Outcomes depend on the evidence and investigation; CreditMango cannot promise a deletion, score change or deadline for your case.
Your next action: Identify one item on your report and decide whether you have evidence that it is wrong. If the information is accurate, return to the rebuilding path for a different next step.
